Horsely double secures B-grade flag for Barnies Beyond Blue
Midfielder Josh Horsely scored a double in the B grade grand final on Saturday to win the trophy for the third year in a row for Barnstoneworth Beyond Blue.
Both Beyond Blue and CYMS Green brought some of their best football, but after a one-all draw at full time, it took extra time to decide the outcome.
Beyond Blue eventually won the match 2 - 1.
Conditions were against both teams. The rain picked up shortly before kick off and
only got worse throughout the game. Despite this, the first goal came only 10 minutes in, after a challenge by the CYMS keeper on Damon Moses was ruled as a penalty.
Horsley calmly slotted the goal to give Barneys an early lead.
Beyond Blue looked to have control of the game but CYMS capitalised on a defensive error shortly before half time to equalise.
The second half proved tough for Beyond Blue, battling both CYMS and the weather.
Greens had the wind behind them, and tried to use it in almost every attacking play with a stream of constant through balls.
The rain also stifled the Barnies attack. They struggled to string together enough passes to put any attacking pressure on CYMS, only managing a few unsuccessful shots before full time.
Choice words by Barnies striker Chris Davis at the full time break about the heart of Beyond Blue inspired the team to dig deep in the final twenty minutes.
A reinvigorated Beyond Blue, with the wind behind them once again, put through a long ball that was collected by Horsley who with his left boot put the ball wide of the keeper and into the back of the net.
Beyond Blue overcame pure exhaustion to hold CYMS out for the 2nd extra time period to secure the B grade trophy.
It was a fairy tale finish for retiring team manager and goal keeper Matt Barr who was proud of the team’s efforts on the day and throughout the season.
