United still in the race after win over Millthorpe

C-Grade minor premiers Waratah Wanderers have sewn up a place in the grand final with a confident 4-2 win over their elder club colleagues, Tahs overs 35s.

The win sets up an elimination final clash with Barnstoneworth United over 35s on the weekend.

Barnies United headed to a cold and blustery Redmond Oval in Millthorpe for their match in the top flight of the ODFA C Grade competition.

Barnies started with a flurry in the opening exchanges and had several shots on target in the first 5 minutes of the game but the Millthorpe keeper kept the nets safe.

It was Millthorpe winger Rob Buesnel who opened the scoring from a well placed free kick that used the wind nicely to beat United keeper Andy Maguire.

Barnies pounced back soon after with a contender for goal of the year from Andy Holmes. Wes Miller sent one of his many long range kicks for the day deep into the Millthorpe penalty area. After a deflection, Holmes hit an overhead bicycle kick sending the ball into the back of the net to the rapturous applause of the Barnies faithful on the side lines. 1-1 at half time. Barnies hit the lead mid way through the second half when winger Marty Felice was felled from behind. Striker Glenn Harpley stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty away. Harpley secured his brace shortly after following a Dennis Tyrie cross that evaded the Millthorpe defence and found him unmarked on the 6 yard line leaving the Millthorpe keeper no chance.

Millthorpe never gave up and scored again through Brady Walker in the dying minutes. Barnies United hung on 3-2 to progress to the finals and keep their season alive.
