HEADER: Millthorpe strike Roy Davis goes high to target another header past Barnestone United defenders in the latest Orange over 35s comp match (l. to r.) keeper Glenn Harpley, Lino Manca, Andy McGuire, Roland Gruneis, and Wayne Stephens
A 5-3 win by Barnestoneworth A-grade over Millthorpe was enough to keep last year’s premiers in the hunt in the Orange A-grade football competition.
Barnestoneworth are now only one win behind two Waratahs side that share the top of the table position.
In other games, Barnestoneworth B continued their strong form with a 7-0 win over Barbarians in the B/C grade competition.
Barnies started slow in the first half before the Boulton clan starting to fire. Jakob Boulton scored a hat trick with brothers Blake scoring a double and Jeremy scoring 1. Wade Manning chipped in for his usual, to round out the scoring. A strong defensive effort was another highlight for the competition leaders.
The win sets up a tantalizing clash with the comp’s other undefeated side CYMS this weekend.
Another come-from behind 5-3 win by the Millthorpe Tigers was the highlight of the over-35s latest competition round.
Goals from Wes Miller and Rolly Gruneis saw Barnestoneworth United shoot to a three-goal lead before a Tigers strike in the final minute off the half brought the score at the break back to 3-1.
But the Tigers kept up their come-from-behind form this season. A tally of no less than five goals from Tigers striker Roy Davis, including two penalties handed Millthorpe the win.
Playing under the lights and in falling rain at Waratahs Stadium on the Friday night, Denley’s Moor winger Nick Hyndes didn’t waste any time opening the scoring in the match against Gladdyatahs.
A penalty for each side awarded in slippery conditions saw the lead stretch to 2-1.
It was a defensive lapse by Denley that gave Gladdyathas striker Matt Duffy all the time in the world to stroll towards the net and slip a shot past keeper Pat Driver.
Gladdies defender Adam ‘Shed World’ Gersbach kept up the momentum before Paul Slinsgby added another. Duffy added to his tally to give Gladdies the 5-3 win.
