Header double seals win for United

BATTLE : Denley midfielder Dan Hillier comes under pressure from United defender Wayne Stephens in Saturday’s clash.

Two flying headers from Barnstoneworth UnIted winger Daryl Guise sealed the win in Saturday’s match against club-mates Denley Moor in the Orange over 35s competition.

Coming off a 6-0 win over competition leaders Millthorpe the previous weekend, Denley started better, their efforts rewarded when a penalty was awarded off a handball in the box.

But, striker Harley Smith’s creative bid for the highlights-reel bombed spectacularly. A subtle toe-tap across the box aimed at catching the keeper off-guard was sent wide by co-conspirator Chris Cameron.

United made the most of their chances. A ricocheting ball off the post found Daryl Guise waiting and a strong header found the back of the net.

Denley’s equaliser came off another penalty, when United keeper Matt Savaro bounced a Denley attacker into the turf. Richie Shields made no mistake to go into the half-time break at 1-1.

Denley had the best of the play as the second term began. One attacking raid saw the ball bouncing anywhere around the box but over the line.

United’s consistent efforts to keep possession paid off when Daryl Guise took his second goal. The winger headed a well-placed cross past Denley keeper Pat Driver. Driver kept his side in the match with a number of solid saves.

Late in the match Denley winger Hayden Trott broke through the United defence for a one on one duel with the keeper with only the final shot sent wide. The match ending with a 2-1 win for United.

Last year's premiers Gladdyatahs are hitting their straps at the right end of the season, scoring eight goals against competition leaders Millthorpe Tigers at home on Saturday.

The confident 8-4 win made it two losses in a row for the Tigers.

In A-grade, Barnstoneworth were unlucky to go down 1-0 against 2nd-paced Waratahs Old Boys, a single penalty goal all that split the two sides.

In B-grade, competition-leaders Barnstoneworth kept their undefeated record intact with a confident 5-1 win over CYMS Sherwood.
